Elton Lin

Educational Consultant

Elton is the founder and CEO of ILUMIN Education, an educational consulting firm that provides expert college admissions counseling and effective life coaching support to high school students pursuing long-term personal and professional success. Based out of the San Francisco Bay Area, ILUMIN’s expertise includes counseling students through the college admissions process and coaching them towards greater purpose, passion, and clarity. ILUMIN’s students have been admitted to every Top 50 university in the United States, including Harvard, Stanford, Yale, MIT, and UPenn. Elton is a member of the Western Association for College Admissions Counseling (WACAC) and the Independent Educational Consultants Association (IECA).
Elton is also the co-founder of Ellie Fun Day, a social enterprise that designs organic baby blankets and accessories and provides fair and dignified employment for victims of domestic abuse in India. He graduated with a BS in Civil Engineering from UC Davis and completed his MDiv in Theology from Trinity International University near Chicago, IL.

 




John Chen

Educational Consultant

John graduated from UCLA with a BA in Business/Economics and is a licensed CPA. He previously was a data analysis and management consultant with PriceWaterhouseCoopers working with clients like Google, VISA and EA Games. In recent years, he followed his dream of empowering youth by serving as a Senior Academic Consultant for the Bay Area's largest educational consulting firm. His vast business, finance, and hi-tech experience provide a deep well of knowledge to guide students towards professional development and getting into the right schools.

In addition, John served as his college fellowship’s resume and interview coach for the past eight years, helping numerous students obtain their first professional jobs in fields such as medicine, biotechnology, computer programming, engineering and more. He also has over 15 years of experience mentoring, tutoring, and teaching hundreds of students of all age groups in various church and non-profit organizations.

Having attended Mission San Jose High School in Fremont, he understands first-hand the unique challenges of growing up in a hyper-competitive environment. John is passionate about helping students realize their full potential and nothing gives him more joy than seeing students become who they were created to be. 

John is a member of the Western Association for College Admissions Counseling. 




Azure Brown

Educational Consultant

Azure joined ILUMIN with more than twenty years of experience helping teens achieve their goals.  She especially enjoys helping students develop their own effective and unique personal statements for college applications, a process that often begins with increasing self-knowledge and confidence. Azure graduated from UC Santa Cruz with a B.A. in American Literature and received her teaching credential in English from San Jose State University.

Azure was a high school English teacher for more than a decade, creating a reading and writing workshop series to accommodate a wide range of student abilities and learning styles. She also served as assistant principal for three years while leading a college prep advisory program, promoting student goal-setting, organization, and accountability.

Since 2009, Azure has been counseling students on all phases of preparing for and applying to college. As a Senior College Admissions Consultant at the Bay Area’s largest educational consulting company, she was recognized as the 2012 Employee of the Year. More recently, Azure was a Senior Admissions Evaluator and Counselor for the University of California. Azure read UC applications and advised prospective freshman and transfer students on the UC application process. 

 

Yii-Shyun Lin

Educational Consultant

Yii-Shyun graduated with a B.A. in Biology from Pomona College and has an honors TESL certificate from the University of California, Santa Cruz. While she originally pursued becoming a vet, she parlayed her abilities to working with youth and college-aged students. She served as an advisor and coach to various student organizations at UCLA, USC, and the Claremont Colleges for over a decade. She supported students by helping edit graduate school applications, resulting in students winning the Truman Fellowship, submitting their doctoral dissertations, and gaining admissions to graduate programs at UCLA, Ohio State, and Columbia University.

In 2009, Yii-Shyun started working at one of the Bay Area’s most successful educational consulting firms. After four years of teaching and college counseling, culminating in her role as a Counseling Director, she started her own educational consulting firm in Istanbul, Turkey. Her students from Istanbul have earned admissions to schools like Columbia, Brown, University of Chicago, Northwestern, and many more.

As a graduate of Gunn High School, Yii-Shyun understands the pressures and expectations local students face. She loves to empower students to become better thinkers and writers as they refine their personal statements; her goal in counseling is to help students gain self-awareness, confidence, and a sense of purpose during the college application season.

 

David Weiner

Educational Consultant

David joins ILUMIN as a lifelong academic with a passion for education and mentorship. He completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Colorado, graduate degrees from Columbia and Georgetown, and most recently a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Pennsylvania. David was the first author on research written with University of Chicago faculty and was an invited speaker to give academic talks at Harvard Law, Stanford, Princeton, Northwestern, and Brown, among others. He served as an undergraduate statistics tutor at Penn, where his dissertation focused on top 25 liberal arts college admissions. Having had personal experience at all levels of highly competitive admissions, David has a fluent understanding of the admissions landscape and is passionate about helping parents and students find a successful balance throughout the high-pressure college application process.

Prior to Penn, David ran the country's largest K-12 school choice program for the New York City Department of Education. His favorite aspect of this role was serving as the lead point person to advise and guide parents through the complex decision-making process of choosing potential schools for their child. David's philosophy has always been to take the time to understand and connect with each student, their needs, abilities, and goals and go the extra mile for them to feel motivated and spoken to.



Alice Ho

Educational Consultant

Alice is a proud parent of a former ILUMIN student. Having had first-hand experience seeing how ILUMIN Education makes a positive impact on students’ lives, Alice joined the consulting team with a passion to share her experience with other families with similar needs. Alice came to the US for college and has worked in biotechnology in the Bay Area for over 25 years.  She understands the challenge and expectations that both students and families are facing.  At ILUMIN, she works with a wide variety of students including international students from China.

Alice graduated with a B.S. in Biochemistry from the University of Wisconsin, Madison and received a Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology from Stanford University.  She speaks both Cantonese and Mandarin.




Lynn Chen

College Essay Specialist

Lynn is a passionate English/ESL teacher at Cupertino High School, with over 10 years of English tutoring experience. She graduated from UC Davis with a double bachelors in Psychology and English in 2008. She received her teaching credential in English from San Jose State University in 2011. A year later, she completed her Masters of Teaching and obtained a certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) at Biola University. She has spent her summers either teaching English overseas or teaching College Essay Writing courses in Cupertino. Lynn's passion for writing and counseling ultimately helps students develop their voice and style as writers, becoming effective communicators and advocates for themselves and others.

 

 



Laura Sutherland

College Essay Specialist

Laura has worked as a writer, editor and writing coach for more than twenty years. Her articles have appeared in national magazines such as Real Simple, Family Fun, Parents, Taste and Travel International, Writer's Digest and Ladies Home Journal. She is the author of six family travel guides and is a contributing editor at FamilyTravelForum.com, where she created their Teen Travel Writing Scholarship contest, which attracts thousands of entries nationwide.   

This will be Laura's fifth year helping high school seniors craft compelling and original college essays that makes admissions officers want to read to the very end.  

 



 

Anjali Nadig

College Essay Specialist

Anjali, a lawyer by trade, has a passion for shaping words into stories. With over 10 years of experience editing college application essays, she is committed to helping students find their unique voice. Prior to working with ILUMIN, she spent three years as the Consulting Operations Manager for the Bay Area’s largest educational consulting firm, leading a team of over 25 consultants. Anjali attended U.C. Berkeley, NYU, and Miami University and holds degrees in law, public policy, and philosophy.

 

 

 



Isabella Hill

College Essay Specialist

Isabella Hill has spent the past 17 years of her life teaching. She has worked with students 3rd grade through college, her "sweet spot" being middle and high school English and Language Arts. Isabella's experience ranges from public school in East Palo Alto to prep school in Menlo Park to private tutoring and coaching. Over the past ten years, she has also interviewed more than forty candidates for admission to Tufts University. Above all else, her mission in life is to help students become more effective communicators and self advocates through writing. Isabella is a graduate of Tufts University where she earned a double degree in Biology and Child Developmental Psychology. She also holds a California Multiple Subject Teaching Credential. Isabella has contributed to KQED's Perspectives series and Spare Change News based in Cambridge, Massachusetts.  




 

Jason C. Gemmer

College Essay Specialist

Jason graduated from UCLA with a B.A. in English and has worked with high school and university students in a number of capacities for nearly twenty years.  Whether teaching in urban public schools, coaching essay writers, or creating curriculum as an international English teacher, Jason enjoys affirming students’ unique strengths and developing their communication skills.  His experiences traveling and working with amazing students from India, Mexico, and Honduras have been career highlights which have deepened his appreciation for diverse cultures.  Jason has also been an advisor and counselor for university students and recent graduates as they launch into the working world.  

 


 


Peter Do

College Essay Specialist

Peter graduated from UC Berkeley in Mechanical Engineering and briefly attended Stanford Graduate School of Business. He has worked for Toyota and NASA and has not only designed medical devices, but also served as an energy efficiency and sustainability consultant. Most recently, he cofounded and started an educational technology company dedicated to giving students better feedback. He regularly volunteers as an elementary school reading tutor and loves helping others develop their voice and agency.

 

 

 


 

Sofia Janney-Roberts

College Essay Specialist

Sofie graduated with a B.A. from Scripps College and received her M.Ed. in Postsecondary Administration and Student Affairs from the University of Southern California. After finding her best fit in Scripps, she became passionate about helping students find their own college matches. Her career began as an AmeriCorps member at College Access Now where she encouraged underserved students to pursue a higher education. These students inspired her to work with admissions offices and school districts across the country to address inequities and to help students navigate and re-invent the admissions process. Over the past eight years, she has supported educational communities in Seattle, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Denver and has enjoyed collecting best practices along the way. Her most recent position was Leading College Access Initiatives for the Denver Public School district.

 


Andrew McLaughlin

College Essay Specialist

Andrew taught English as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Chongqing, China before receiving an MPA from the University of Washington in Seattle. He also worked as a private college counselor for several years, helping students from all over the Bay Area gain admission to top ranked US universities. He enjoys working with students to find the core narratives of their lives and is excited to join the wonderful team at ILUMIN Education. Currently, Andrew serves the public as Management Analyst for the Superior Court of California. He values public institutions, civic engagement, and the principle of social justice.


 


 

 

Annalisa Bolin

College Essay Specialist

Annalisa is a PhD candidate at Stanford University and holds honors degrees from the University of York in England and Wesleyan University in Connecticut. She taught English in France and as a Princeton in Asia teaching fellow at a high school in Taiwan, where she also helped students study for the SAT and gain admission to US universities. For the last several years, she has worked as a language tutor and editor for international ESL graduate students in the Bay Area. She speaks French, less Mandarin than she used to, and a little Kinyarwanda.

 

 


 

Judy Liu

Administrative Assistant

Judy Liu is the Administrative Assistant of ILUMIN Education. She received her BS degree in Business Computer Information from San Francisco State University. She worked as a software test engineer for about 5 years. In 2005, she moved to China with her family and subsequently returned to the United States in 2009. In recent years, Judy has been a stay-at-home mom raising two wonderful children. As her children have grown up and gone to college, she began working as the Administrative Assistant for ILUMIN since 2017.
