Girls Who Code Community Partnership with Ilumin education

“Hello World”

Are you a girl or gender non-binary student who likes computers? Does it fascinate you that it’s possible to tell them what to do, and how to handle user reactions? Do you want to learn how to do that?

Computer science, or CS, is quite possibly the fastest-advancing field in human history. In less than a century, we humans have gone from giant room-sized computers to ones that can self-drive cars!

Whether you grew up with a dad (or a mom!) who’s deep in the tech field, or whether you couldn’t tell BASIC from C++, the nonprofit Girls Who Code has a space for you – in their online, virtual Summer Internship Program! Dedicated to improving the standing of women and gender non-binary people in the field of CS, this spectacular nonprofit is just waiting to raise you up.

To whom is it open?

Girls Who Code’s Summer Immersion Program is for high school students who’ve just finished 9th, 10th, or 11th grade (rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors) and identify as girls or gender non-binary.

What’s the schedule?

The summer immersion program is short – only two weeks long. There are three sessions in 2021, from June 21st to July 2nd, July 12th to July 23rd, and August 2nd to August 13th.

Classes will begin at 9:00 to 9:30 AM, and are available in the Eastern, Central, or Pacific time zones. (You need to pick a time zone – and stick with it – when you apply). And they last 4-5 hours a day. The schedule is different every day, but will typically include about two hours of instruction time, 60-90 minutes of independent work, and time for

It’s not a lot of time – but you’ll walk away with some amazing new knowledge and superb accomplishments!

What will I learn?

Have you heard of HTML, CSS, and/or Javascript? A little scared of them, maybe? Don’t be! At Girls Who Code, you’ll master all three.

You’ll also learn about the (often overlooked) impacts that women have had in the field of CS. You’ll meet inspiring female role models who are at the tops of their tech careers today.

And you’ll learn to be a coder yourself, designing – in just the first week – both a personal web page and a Buzzfeed-style personality quiz. After that, during week 2, you’ll work on a larger-scale project related to activism.

And how much does it cost?

Wait for it… because here’s the best news: the Summer Immersion Program at Girls Who Code is 100% free! Not only that, but qualifying students can actually be paid to learn how to code, with a stipend of up to $300!

Okay, I’m convinced, and I want this! How do I get in?

Like most things academic, the Summer Immersion Program at Girls Who Code is application-based. There are two application deadlines, one for early acceptance and then a regular deadline.

And the early acceptance deadline is coming up very soon – on February 17th! (The regular deadline isn’t until March 19th.) As you might expect, students who apply early will be given priority, so if you’re waitlisted in the early acceptance period, you’ll get priority over anyone who applies for regular admissions.

When will I hear back?

If you apply by the early deadline, you’ll be notified of your status by mid-March. If you apply by the regular deadline, you’ll be notified by mid-April.

Let’s get coding!

If you (or your child) is a high-schol-age girl or gender non-binary student, don’t get left out of the tech boom. This summer, get ready to become a real coder with this incredible (and free!) educational opportunity with Girls Who Code. You’ll join a superb sisterhood of computer savvy girls who are working to become just as “techie” (and computer literate!) as any guy out there.

Think about it – but not for too long, because you wouldn’t want to miss that early application deadline on the 17th!
